Wow! This is just what I needed at Easter. I heard evangelicals are rejoicing at their place at the table at the White House. I do not know the God they worship. My God is a god of love, acceptance, peace, and kindness. Jesus welcomed the stranger and the outcast. Immigrants and LGBTQ folks would have been his best friends. He loved diversity, as does Nature. He would have approved of DEI. Many so-called religious people just use religion as a shield to hide their prejudice and bigotry. The so-called Christianity that is so prevalent today is unrecognizable from Jesus’ teaching. The Jesus in your sermon is the Jesus I know and love. Happy Easter!
Thank you so much...a PERFECT Easter message. I needed this today to soften the anger I feel towards "Christians" or rather people doing hateful things in the name of their Christ.
I too, had a close relationship with Jesus at the age of 4 and then turned to the Jesus Movement in the late 1960s early 1970s. But like you, I felt the Jesus I knew was not being represented...too much harsh judgement and hatred. I became atheist for 20 years...if that was God I wanted nothing to do with "him."
Happily, at some point my heart softened and I was able to let some form of spirituality back into my heart and life.
Thank you for this. I left the church with the call to ministry still within me. I'm gay. I'm kinky. I am a feminist, an activist, a mystic. Folks in the church tap me on the shoulder from time to time, asking if seminary is or was ever part of my future. It won't ever be. Had the church of my midlife been more like this? I would have considered.
Remember Jesus said let the little children come to me. We meet him as children. As we grow we forget he dwells within us and we in him. I have been through lots of ups and downs in religions and I am not in a Christian church now, but the Jesus of my childhood lights my path.

This was very powerful…it has left me a bit wordless…I can’t respond with anything profound.
Yes, Thank You, Joy
